Many people wondered why RM has a smiling face in a starfish as our logo.  There is a meaningful story that connects this image to RM:  

Many years ago there was a person going for a walk on a beach enjoying a bright sunny day and the salt air breeze from the ocean.  The tide was lower than usual on an unusually hot summer day.  Normally, tide pools would be all over the beach but the sun evaporated much of the water endangering thousands of starfish that were suddenly exposed to the extreme heat.  Starfish of many shapes, sizes and colors were in danger of dying unless they could be covered by the surf.  

 

As the person continued their journey down the beach, he saw someone in the distance running back and forth from the surf and the shore.  As he got closer they saw an old man picking up a starfish with each hand and then run to the ocean tossing each into the refreshing water.  Back and forth the man went tossing starfish into the ocean.  The person approached the man and chastised him saying “I’ve been watching you as I wander down this beach.  Thousands of starfish were stranded when the tide went out.  Even if 100 people were to help you rescue these creatures, a vast majority will die because there are too many to help.  Why do you try when you know your efforts are meaningless?”  The older man walked over to the younger person clearly out of breath from his activity. He leaned down and grabbed a single starfish and held it up and said “You’re right, these creatures were caught off guard by the sudden and swift retreat of the tide and I won’t be able to save every starfish that is laying helplessly here on the beach.  One thing I do know, I can make a difference with this one.  And after this one is safe in the water I can make a difference for another one.  I know I can’t save everyone of these starfish, but I can make a difference on the ones I grab hold.”  

 

RM is based on the same philosophy.  We are not going to be able to support all the disabled children in the world but we work to make a difference with the ones we touch in China.  RM is focused on supporting children with autism, blindness and cerebral palsy and their families.  Our goal is to share God’s love to the families to bring hope, support and comfort to those we work with.  We can’t solve all the challenges the world brings, but with God’s help we can make a difference one life at a time.  The smiling face in a starfish is a symbol of our dedication to support each family we come across.
